Who Are We?
We are the Pitt Climbing Team, a new competitive club sport at the University of Pittsburgh and an official collegiate climbing team under USA Climbing, the national governing body for competitive climbing. Our team is made up of 30 hard-working climbers who are determined to make this first competitive season a success.
While rock climbing may not be widely known as a sport, competitive climbing will be featured in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Last spring, a group of students who are passionate about the sport, decided to bring competitive climbing to Pitt as a club team. Our goal was to introduce people to the sport we all love and develop a team of strong, dedicated climbers that compete at the collegiate level.
At our first few competitions, this team proved how strong we are. We’ve had five first place finishes since our season started. We are expecting to have several members qualify for nationals, which the first year club sport budget is not equipped to handle. This team has the skills of a long-standing program but the budget of a new team. This means that our members will pay costs totalling to nearly $10,000 dollars in dues only to cover our coaching and practice facilities. As a year-round, indoor sport, we are travelling to competitions as often as we can, and have been using our small funding to cover travel costs to make competitions an option for everyone. This funding will run out by the end of the semester without your help.
