SHRS Experiential Education (SEEd) Fund

Introduction:

Each year students at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) supplement their education with volunteer clinic hours, humanitarian trips, and presentations at professional conferences in their field. These experiences give students an opportunity to put their education into practice, but unfortunately, not all of students can afford to engage in these crucial experiences.  Your gift to the SHRS Experiential Education (SEEd) Fund will help cover the costs related to these experiences to ensure that all students can participate in these meaningful activities.

Our project:

We’re laying the groundwork to cultivate each student’s potential through the SEEd Fund. The SEEd Fund provides mini-grants to students to pursue new experiences that take them beyond the confines of the classroom — opportunities that will enhance their education beyond textbooks and exams. Your gift will provide students with the means to gain invaluable knowledge and rich experiential learning.

Funds will support student conference registration fees, transportation to extracurricular volunteer opportunities, and costs relating to student led humanitarian projects.

Meet our students:

Bridget Kotek -- Class of 2019 -- Undergraduate Rehabilitation Science

Bridget says, “I am currently working on becoming fluent in Spanish because I believe it is important that health care is accessible for everyone, no matter which language they speak. Speaking the same language helps the patient communicate their health status more clearly and makes them feel calmer with the provider, which ultimately could result in better outcomes. By studying abroad in Spain, I will be able to further develop my Spanish in an immersive environment.”

Pitchulee Uayporn -- Class of 2020 -- Communication Science & Disorders

Pitchulee says, “Having the opportunity to attend a professional development conference not only expanded my horizons, but also allowed me to learn more about translational research and meet established medical professionals. This exciting experience has widened my perspective, strengthened my knowledge and skills, and increased likelihood of collaboration with peers and professionals.”

Through the SEEd Fund, more of our students will be able to engage in academic and service-related ventures in locations around the world; participate in cutting-edge, original research projects; attend national and international conferences; and participate in internships or community service projects. Very simply, the SEEd Fund seeks to afford our students much more than an educational experience to list on their resume. It gives them exposure to, and an appreciation for, learning in all its shapes and forms.

How you can help:

A gift of any size will help to support hands-on learning for future health and rehabilitation sciences leaders. By supporting and encouraging students to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom, we’re fostering a love for lifelong learning — something that is critical in all fields.

Even if you are not able to make a gift right now, please help us reach our goal by sharing this page with your friends and family. We appreciate your help spreading the word about the SEEd Fund at Pitt SHRS.
