Help the Asian Studies Center and Film Studies Program launch Screenshot: Asia, our new Asian film and media screening series and film festival!
This year, the Asian Studies Center and the Film Studies Program are developing Screenshot: Asia, Pitt’s film series and festival dedicated to promoting and celebrating Asian and Asian American film and video. As Pitt continues to expand its global footprint and increase its embrace of internationalism, initiatives such as Screenshot: Asia serve a critical role. The film series and festival will increase student, staff, faculty, and community awareness of the diversity of cultures and peoples from all over the world and instigate learning about crucial current events and cultural elements that are driving contemporary Asian societies.
Screenshot: Asia is a collective project among faculty, staff, and students to celebrate Asian diversity through film and media programming. By screening films, hosting workshops, bringing in speakers, and many other activities, we hope to promote cultural diversity and encourage diverse arts education in Southwestern PA.
Our proposed programming over the next year includes screenings and workshops, culminating in our first annual festival, scheduled for September 2020, which will include events such as:
Spotlight on Asian Horror in October 2020 (pre-Halloween screening of some of the best horror films out of Asia)
Screenshot: Silent Asia featuring a film and live accompaniment
Screen and video exhibitions
Creative filmmakers’ workshops
Year-round film screenings and discussions
These events will culminate in a one-week Asian and Asian American film festival, in which we will show some of the newest independent films coming out of Asia, which will include the Biennial University of Pittsburgh Japan Documentary Film Award.
Moreover, we need a place where students can learn how to be the arts leaders of tomorrow. Though the series, students can intern with the festival, design programs, and learn about the ins and outs of festival life. We hope to mold Pittsburgh’s art community for tomorrow and years to come!
In order to make this possible, we need a great deal of financial help to put on a media series and film festival! Our budget is $140,000. While some of those funds will come from grants and corporate donors, we can’t do it without individual donors. To this end, we hope to raise at least $7000 through individual donations here at Engage Pitt!
With your generous donations, that $7000 can help to:
DONATE: Every little bit helps. $5, 10, 15 donations all get us a little bit closer to our goal.

You are the unsung hero of filmmaking, capturing dialogue and sound, all while holding a heavy boom out of frame.
You are the organizer that puts equipment where it needs to be. Without you, there are no cameras, no tracks, and no dollies.
You are the base of the production. You make light happen, and, in film, nothing can work without light.
You are the workhorse of the production. You are the first in line to make images magical.
AKA, the Sayombhu Mukdeeprom . Recognized as an artist in your own right, you are the person for whom the phrase “painting with light” was made.
AKA, the Henry Golding. Your beautiful face brings happiness, sadness, fear, and elation to audiences everywhere.
AKA the Mindy Kaling. You make the words that form the backbone of the film. You give characters desire, wit, adoration, and make them the humans that audiences grow to love.
AKA, the Abbas Kiarostami. You are the master of your domain—the film set—and make every piece fall into place. It’s your job to bring meaning from chaos.
AKA, the Akira Kurosawa. You are the executive who makes it happen. You see brilliance and allow it to shine.
