National Society of Black Engineers Annual Convention 2020

Who Are We?

The University of Pittsburgh’s National Society of Black Engineers chapter (Pitt NSBE) is a student-led organization with a mission to:

“increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”

We are focused on providing resources and opportunities to Black engineering students in the Swanson School of Engineering. Services for our members include networking opportunities,post-graduation planning resources, tutoring, social events, career preparation, and other supportive programming.

We also serve the Pittsburgh community and the engineers of tomorrow through our outreach initiatives. Our Pre-Collegiate Initiative (PCI) is geared towards empowering K-12 students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in engineering. Our TORCH initiative is focused on organizing opportunities for our members to serve the local Pittsburgh community.

Our Project

Pitt NSBE is looking to bring 25 members to the 46th Annual NSBE Convention in San Antonio, Texas, which will take place during March 25-29, 2020. At the last Annual NSBE Convention in Detroit, MI our members had the opportunity to network with 300+ companies and graduate institutions, attend some of the hundreds of professional development workshops, and much more all at a conference attended by over 15,000 engineers and engineering students of color.

Many of our members who attended even left Detroit with offers for internships, co-ops, and full-time positions. The 2020 convention is projected to be even larger in scale, and we want to provide our members with the chance to be a part of this valuable opportunity. Our attendance this year will require funds for lodging for our members for four nights as well as round-trip air travel to San Antonio.

  • Costs
    • Flights (25 round trip flights to San Antonio @ ~$450/flight): $11,250
    • Hotel Costs (7 rooms, 4 nights, $169/night): $4,732
    • Additional Support for Members Registration: $1000
    • Total Costs of attending conference: $16,932
  • Additional Funding Sources
    • Projected Additional Funding (various sources):$7,000
    • Travel Deposits ($220/attendee): $5,500
  • Projected Net Cost for Chapter: $4,432

We need your help to offset this cost of attendance and make travel more affordable for the chapter!

Where will your donation go?

Donations during this campaign will be put toward hotel and travel costs for our members. Any excess funds raised will go toward Pitt NSBE’s general operating expenses (programs, workshops, etc.).

Your contributions help us significantly, and we are sincerely thankful for any and all donations. We look forward to keeping you updated with stories and pictures from our trip to Nationals. Help us provide our members with a unique opportunity!
