WCE Goes to Spain

Who We Are:

The University of Pittsburgh Women’s Choral Ensemble (WCE) was founded in 1927 and is a group of strong women devoted to spreading empowering and moving rhetoric through song. Our group is open to undergraduates and graduate students alike, and there are even spots for the University’s faculty. Every year, our choir performs a Holiday and a Spring concert. Additionally, we perform in the Pitt Choir Showcase alongside Pitt Men’s Glee Club and Heinz Chapel Choir, and we host a Women’s Choir Festival and invite fellow all-female choirs to perform. Our members participate in singing two national anthem events per semester at the University of Pittsburgh sporting events to support our fellow Panthers!

Along with these events, we are very open to new opportunities! For example, we are performing in the Purple Beats and Brushes event hosted by the Student Executive Council - Pitt School of Social Work. This event is a free art show for domestic violence awareness.  Other activities we have participated in include the University’s Lantern Night, the Nutcracker Performance at the Benedum Center, a Mother’s Day concert, and many more. As the only all-women choir on campus, we find it pertinent to include music within our repertoire that reflects strength and woman empowerment. Our Executive Board is excellent in planning fundraisers and contacting alumni to further a strong and cohesive community. Additionally, we set out to inform those who are associated with the choir about upcoming events, fundraisers, and performances.

We love what we do, not only for our campus, but the city of Pittsburgh, and would love to spread our circle even further. Music is an immensely powerful form of communication and has been bringing people together since the beginning of time. We humbly hope you will be able to help us reach our goal so we can continue to spread this music and expand our mission.

Our Project:

From June 17-24, 2020, we have been invited to perform in the Festival for Women’s & Treble Voices in San Sebastian, Spain. During this week, we will be singing alongside several American choirs, including Peninsula Women’s Chorus, Southern Arizona Women’s Chorus, Voca Lyrica, and Belle Voci.

This is WCE’s first tour with a destination in Europe. The choir is eager to explore the beautiful area of San Sebastian and travel to Madrid following the Festival. Our repertoire will include music composed by the Artistic Director of the Festival, Dr. Andrea Ramsey.  This tour is an amazing opportunity to sing alongside very talented choirs and be directed by an enthusiastic, well-known director.  We want as many of our members to get the chance to go. By donating today you will be financially helping our members be able to attend this opportunity.
