Susan Gilbert Memorial Fund

We are raising funds towards the establishment of The Susan Gilbert Memorial Fund. Established by the Gilbert and Murray Families, colleagues and friends, the endowed fund will honor her memory as a lifelong learner by supporting students in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

Sue was a Pitt Panther through and through. She joined Pitt as Assistant Treasurer in January 2000. Throughout her tenure, she provided strategic oversight and effective management of the University's capital finance structure, banking and cash management policies/systems, and short-term investment management. In addition to her years working at the University, she also held two master’s degrees from Pitt – an MBA from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business as well as a Master of Public Policy and Management from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

According to Sue, she was "just a finance guy" but to those that loved her, she was so much more. Sue spent the last 8 years courageously fighting the devastating effects of breast cancer. Through the darkest times of her fight, she maintained an unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and co-workers.  While enduring times of agony and despair in her own life, she took it upon herself to ignore her own challenges and instead, chose to lift up others through her incredible energy, positive attitude and infectious smile. Sue will be remembered as a true fighter, selfless person, and a bright light in what sometimes seems like a harsh world. The team in the Office of the Treasurer knows that she considered them as family, but above all else, she cherished her role as mother of Lauren and Shane and 25-year marriage to Steve.

The Susan Gilbert Memorial Fund

The Susan Gilbert Memorial Fund will support education-related expenses for students in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. Like Susan, most students pursuing a degree in the Master of Public Policy and Management program work full-time while being the backbone of their family. A gift to endow this memorial fund will help to relieve the financial stress of associated and various costs of attendance. The Fund will be administered, and recipients selected by the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. While our campaign goal of $25,000.00 will establish the Susan Gilbert Memorial Fund, our dream goal is to endow the Fund at the $100,000 level to enable Susan's memory to impact students at the scholarship level. If at any time in the future the book value of the fund exceeds the then current dollar threshold for scholarships through additional contributions from the donors or others, the fund may be converted to a scholarship, and will then be known as the Susan Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund.
