Pitt Nursing Anesthesia: Advancing Nursing Science, Education and Practice

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing changes the face of nursing practice by preparing our students to deliver the highest quality care. The Nursing Anesthesia department is no exception. We continue to be ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top U.S. Nurse Anesthesia programs, currently holding the #4 spot in the combined MSN and DNP rankings. Also, the Program received a 10-year accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs in June 2020 (this is the maximum accreditation length) and received no citations. This was our 3rd consecutive 10-year citation free accreditation! This success is not possible without the hard work of our faculty, staff, students, and the generous support of our alumni.

Our Project

Happily, we seem to be slowly returning to some type of normal, and I am once again requesting support for our students to attend the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Annual Congress. As of the date of our campaign launch, the AANA plans to host its first ever hybrid Congress with both in-person and virtual events. This year, in-person events will be held in Austin, Texas, from August 13-17, 2021 and there is expected to be at least a 50% capacity allowed at the venue at that time. As you are aware, this meeting provides networking opportunities, cutting edge didactic content and the opportunity for professional socialization. We are thrilled to once again have our students attend.

We appreciate the past generosity that you have shown and count on your support each year as the cost for students to attend continues to rise. Student registration is now $350 dollars and this does not include travel expenses, lodging, or meals. Students were unable to attend last year’s Congress because of the pandemic, but gifts from donors like you to the Nurse Anesthesia Student Travel Fund assisted 26 students to attend the 2019 meeting. Although there are still many variables that exist around attendance at the 2021 Congress because of Covid, our goal is to make sure no student is prohibited from attending because of cost.

This year, we have set our goal to raise $10,000 to provide sponsorships to the AANA annual congress. With your help, I know we can achieve this goal and provide support for our students. I am sure you are bombarded with requests for financial donations, just as I am. However, I would ask you to remember what it was like when you were a student in our program and struggling to make ends meet. It would be a great kindness to our present students if you could assist their attendance. Thanks again for considering my request and as always, Hail to Pitt Anesthesia!

- John O’Donnell

*Gifts that are made over our goal will support the Nursing Anesthesia Travel Fund for future classes.
