PittB: Back-to-Back Champs, with a long season ahead

March 01, 2017

Our Spring Season was ignited two weeks ago under the blistering sun in Tampa, Florida, and we have three months and four tournaments to go until this fire burns out.

Day one consisted of a dominating showing over USF, FIT, FSU, and a close win over Miami. Day two the team demonstrated similar success with wins over FGCU and Northwestern. Day three, championship day, the team proved their grit, resolve, and mental focus with a universe point win over Miami in the semifinals, to go on to play (and beat) UCF in a blowout finals game.

Over the course of the weekend our team had the opportunity to practice our offensive sets, to run different defensive schemes, and to work out our kinks on the field that will help us to prepare our upcoming tournaments, and more importantly, the series come April.

None of this success, our success, was possible without your help. We cannot begin to thank all of donors, family, and friends for the support that they have showed us throughout our campaign, and will continue to show us throughout our spring season.

Thank you, for helping us get to Florida, for providing us with the opportunity to demonstrate the strength of our team and of our program, and for the chance to reclaim our title once again in sunny Florida.

Stay tuned for the season ahead!

Project Completed!

December 16, 2016

Thank you all for giving to help us achieve our goals of going to Florida. We managed to raise $2,810. This will help us cover our bid fees, hotel, and transportation costs in Florida. We absolutely could not have done this without all our wonderful family, friends, and alumni. We are very thankful for the support we have received and cannot wait to go out there and play this February.

Thanks again everyone this really shows the strength of the program.

See you this spring.

Winter Workouts

December 04, 2016

We're now just 12 weeks away from our goal of attending the Florida Warmup, and we want to thank you for making our goal possible.

Without the support of our families, friends, program, community, and donors, we would not be able to achieve the level of success that we strive for. Excellence does not exist within an vacuum!

-------------------------

With the fall season over our winter workouts are now in full swing.

We began our first track workout last Tuesday with a grueling 600m time trial to set the pace for the indoor season. Winter workouts in the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse hold a special place in the team's heart. Track workouts are full of moments of extreme exhaustion and fatigue, but a resilient persistence to finish what we set out to do. The start of the winter season is usually marked by at least one person stand by the trash can at the end of the night, if not multiple people.

But, more importantly, track conditioning is also an incredible experience for the team to solidify itself. It's a space that provides opportunities to pick each other up, to encourage each other, and push each other to be our very best. Here we move from being great frisbee players to becoming great athletes. We seek to increase our speed, dexterity, endurance, and stamina. Through this process, working to better ourselves individually, we collectively become a better team.

-------------------------

The winter season also means it's time to study (not the finals type of studying!). Film sessions are in full swing. Here we get to spend more time on chalk talk, to theorize different plays, and weigh the pros and cons of different offenses and defenses.

We can look over our play from the past to correct our mistakes to ensure we play our best in the future.

We're working hard during film sessions and on the track to prepare for Florida, and the Spring ahead.

Thanks for checking in and please share, donate, and stay updated throughout our campaign and the launch of our Spring season to help the team prepare for the Florida Warmup!

CCC and SCS - The end of the Fall Season

November 23, 2016

Thank you to all of our generous donors, and everyone who has shared our campaign with their family and friends! We want to keep you updated on our teams' progress.

-------------------------

With the end of the fall season officially marked by our last fall tournament, Steel City Showdown, our teams have had the chance to reflect on the success of the past few weeks and where we are going from here to get ready for Spring season.

Pitt A had a fantastic showing at Classic City Classic, in Athens, Georgia. Ultiworld described Pitt's presence as "an opportunity flex the strength of [our] program." (Check out more coverage at https://ultiworld.com/2016/11/10/seamen-burn-lead-2017-storylines-coming-classic-city-classic-mens)

Sam Jennings, Pitt A Veteran, recounts his experience at CCC:

"Each year the Pitt Ultimate, A team, travels to Athens, Georgia to compete in the Classic City Classic. For the team this is an extraordinary bonding experience both on and off the field. Unlike previous years, CCC was not our last tournament this fall, and in turn served as the perfect venue to showcase the quality of the program, and the talent of the new recruits. We spread out playing time across the team by playing mixed lines of returners and rookies, and saw exceptional play from everyone. Now the roster has been finalized and Pitt A looks on to the winter season, a time for preparation and training."

Just a week later, both teams had the opportunity to compete at Steel City Showdown, our own prestigious tournament hosted in Pittsburgh. PittA went 7-0 for the weekend, claiming victory over regional powerhouses like the University of Maryland and Lehigh University. PittB went 2-5, despite some close games with Maryland and Carnegie Mellon, and with an incredible universe point win over Temple University.

"At the end of this Fall season, we headed to Turner Valley to compete with many teams in our region at Steel City Showdown.  We had been putting in a ton of effort at practice in the weeks leading up to the tournament, which really showed in how Pitt B performed over the weekend.  While we lost a couple close games, we learned from each and every one and moved forward as a team.  We finished the weekend with a great win over Temple University on Universe Point, during which Alex Reiser finished his college career with a great sky for the final score.  This weekend was a great finish to our fall season and now we can look forward to the upcoming work this winter.  Over which, we will train as a team by doing multiple track workouts and film sessions in order to develop as a team.  Personally, as it is my first year playing college ultimate, I look forward to seeing our team grow both as Ultimate players and as teammates as the season progresses.  Keep an eye out for Pitt B this spring!" - Joshua Pogue, PittB Rookie

Starting next week, after a much deserved Thanksgiving break, both teams ramp up track workouts, film sessions, and strength conditioning. Stay tuned through our winter conditioning, as we prepare for Florida, and the Spring Season ahead!

$25

Backhand

The backhand is a simple throw beginners learn to help ease them into the game. It's simple, but important. Your 'backhand' is just as important, and will help us fill a van with gas for the tournament.

$50

Flick

The flick throw is the second essential throw to any player's frisbee arsenal. Your 'flick' throw will help us cover the cost of one room for a night.

$100

Scoober

The scoober is a more challenging, over-the-head throw, used to help players break their way out of difficult situations and gain momentum on the field. Your 'scoober' throw will help a player to pay their registration fee for the tournament.

$250

Hammer

The hammer is another over-the-head throw that can travel downfield quickly. Your 'hammer' throw will help cover the bid fee of the tournament for the whole team.

$500

Layout-D

A Layout-D is when a player 'gets horizontal' and leaves the ground in a jumping like motion to make an incredible defensive play. Your 'Layout-D' will help the team pay for hotels for the vast majority of our tournament.

$1,000

Greatest

A greatest is potentially the ultimate play a player can make to bring glory to their team - it is when a player catches a disc that is trailing out of bounds mid-air and throws it back in for an assisted score - before touching the ground! Your 'Greatest,' besides looking sick, will hype the team up, cover the tournament fee, transportation, and basic lodging for the whole team for the duration of the tournament.
