Although this project has concluded, if you would still like to make a donation to support the Rowing Club, you may always do so here.
Since 1988, the University of Pittsburgh Rowing Club, or Pitt Crew, has been dedicated to a tradition of strength, honor, power, and speed. Through the hard work of every rower in the team’s history, we have been able to establish ourselves as one of the top competitive club sports at Pitt, challenging various intercollegiate schools from all over the East Coast.
Many of our competitors hold positions at their universities as varsity programs, meaning their school directly funds them. Pitt Crew is unique because it is a club team, so we do not receive this kind of funding. The responsibility to meet race fee requirements, travel costs, and most importantly, equipment purchase and maintenance rests in the hands of team members and fundraising determination.
Our team is co-ed, meaning that we have both a full-size men’s team and women’s team. This means that we typically share equipment, but when it comes to shells (boats), this is not possible. Each shell is created with a weight range in mind and this means that many of the shells that the men’s team uses are just too large for the women to row adequately.
We are looking to eventually buy a women’s single 1x, as well as repair one that we already own. A single 1x is a boat that holds one person and uses two sculling oars to row. The men’s team already has a single 1x and the women are looking to expand their abilities at practice and learn how to row singles as well.
Our goal is to raise $7,000 to go towards the cost of repairing a single 1x that we own, eventually buy a new women’s single 1x, cover travel expenses, and equipment repairs. Singles 1x are typically $10,000 and so we are hoping to exceed our goal as well as raise funds in other ways. Travel to Camp Bob, our spring training camp, is a similar monetary demand. Camp Bob is where our women's team has the most freedom to try new things and learn how to row the singles 1x that we would be able to repair. The funds will go towards the:
