Summer Science Outreach Camp: Inspiring Future Scientists

Who We Are:

The Pitt Science Outreach Club is a newly formed student group stemming from the existing Science Outreach Program here at the University of Pittsburgh. Our club was created to promote the scientific research being conducted at the University, to foster an interest in scientific knowledge, to help Pitt students apply their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) outside of the classroom, and to continue development and implementation of STEM outreach programs for the Greater Pittsburgh Community.

We are involved in a large number of projects and events including the Mobile Science Lab Program, participation in community events, Summer Science Camp, and Sciencepalooza!

What's Our Project: Summer Science Camp 2015!!!

The summer science camp program brings Pitt students, Pitt faculty & staff, and youth of our community together to introduce and excite youth about science. We partner with experts at the University to develop a fun, engaging, hands-on science curriculum that a team of students (we like to refer to ourselves as science mentors) deliver to youth from a number of Pittsburgh communities. This summer we plan to bring our camp to youth in Homewood, East Liberty, the Hill District, North Shore, and Knoxville.

Camp runs at each location for 1 full week. During day 1 campers learn all about the scientific method and the steps of the research process. We then form science teams with about 4-5 campers and 1 science mentor per group. Each team picks a topic of interest and decides on a scientific question they would like to explore!  Science teams work on research design, background review, project execution, data collection, data analysis, and a poster presentation. At the end of camp each science team presents their research project to the other campers and their families and friends.

By the end of 1 week we hope to have: empowered youth to feel like they can do science, to contested summer learning loss, to inspired future scientists, and to improved community health though science education.

What's Our Goal:

Our goal is to raise $5,000 to put towards the overall cost of our camp!

Camp will run for 5 weeks at 5 separate locations. We expect to reach 100+ youth with our program. Your generous donation will fund the cost of experimental supplies, computers, transportation, science mentoring, and other costs associated with our program.

Thank you!
