Experiential Learning for Veterans in Assistive Technology and Engineering (ELeVATE)
While large scale combat operations in the War on Terror have officially concluded, many of our nation’s Veterans still live with the war every day of their lives. It can be difficult to transition from serving in an active-duty role into one of civilian responsibilities and demands, especially in cases where Veterans begin to pursue higher education and their future careers. While the GI bill can provide tuition and financial support for those that qualify, these student Veterans still need to obtain the real-world experience in their chosen fields to complete their education and fill their toolbox with all they need moving forward. This is where the Experiential Learning in Assistive Technology and Engineering (ELeVATE) program fills the void.
ELeVATE, housed in the University of Pittsburgh's Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL), is a holistic transition program that supports student Veterans pursuing STEM careers such as computer science, mechanical and bio-engineering, and digital design, with a special emphasis on assistive technology and engineering. The program was originally conceived as a simple transition program for recently separated Veterans, but has grown to support ROTC students, Military Academy Cadets, and children of Veterans in their educational pursuits.
ELeVATE opens doors to academic support, mentoring, contacts, and friendships that provide benefits long after students complete the program.
How You Can Help
Your contribution will help raise the funds to cover the living stipends for veterans during the 10-week, on-campus portion of the summer 2025 ELeVATE program. Funds raised above our goal will be applied to stipends for other ELeVATE participants.
Why ELeVATE is Important
ELeVATE participants engage in experiential learning, rehabilitation counseling, mentoring, academic preparation and career exposure activities. The components are designed to increase self-efficacy and outcome expectations which help participants achieve their performance goals as they enroll in and complete engineering and technology degree programs and pursue a graduate degree or employment in engineering and technology.
Testimonials
