Habitat for Humanity Service Trip

Habitat for Humanity at Pitt: Building Hope, One Home at a Time

At Habitat for Humanity at Pitt, our mission is clear: we're dedicated to promoting affordable housing throughout the Pittsburgh area. Each weekend, our passionate members roll up their sleeves and work on homes across the city, making a tangible difference in our community. This fall, we've made impactful strides in neighborhoods like Millvale, Garfield, and Armstrong, often tackling multiple projects in a single weekend.

In Garfield, we've partnered with Open Hands to demolish walls, paving the way for new, improved structures later this year. Meanwhile, in Armstrong, we're collaborating with local Habitat affiliates to clean out homes, paint rooms, and utilize new tools. Each experience enriches our members, allowing us to learn and grow together as we help others.

This March, we're excited to embark on our annual service trip as part of Habitat's Collegiate Challenge. For the fourth consecutive year, we'll be working with Cape Fear's Habitat for Humanity. Our bond with them as grown strong, and both organizations eagerly anticipate reuniting to build together. Unlike our local projects, this trip allows us to construct a house from the ground up, giving our members the chance to develop invaluable skills that will last a lifetime. The camaraderie we build while working towards a shared goal creates lasting connections among us.

The Collegiate Challenge: A Journey of Service

Each March, a caravan of minivans departs from the chilly hills of Pittsburgh, heading south to participate in the Collegiate Challenge. This program encourages college students to collaborate with Habitat affiliates in our collective vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.

During our week of service, we engage in hands-on workdays, dedicating hours to frame walls, install windows and doors, and shingle roofs, among other essential tasks. It's a fantastic opportunity for all members, whether it's your first time hammering a nail or framing an entire wall.

What makes this experience truly special is the chance to work alongside future homeowners, who contribute at least 300 hours of "sweat equity" into their new homes. Their inspiring stories energize our team and reinforce our commitment to affordable housing long after we return to campus.

How You Can Help

We invite you to support our group of 25 students as we travel to Wilmington, North Carolina, to serve with Habitat for Humanity. Our goal is to minimize the trip's costs, ensuring that everyone who wishes to participate can do so, regardless of their financial situation. Your generous donations will help cover:

  • Minivan rental for our journey from Pittsburgh to North Carolina
  • Group meals
  • Local housing accommodations
  • Supplies and safety equipment for the build site
  • Program fees

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. We sincerely appreciate your support and look forward to sharing stories and pictures from our week of service. If you're unable to donate, sharing our campaign with your network is another meaningful way to help us succeed. Thank you for considering our cause!
