Thank you for visiting! This campaign has concluded, but you can continue to support the Alberta Sbragia Fund for Graduate European Studies here.
As many of you were friends and colleagues of Alberta’s, we wanted to share some sad news. Alberta’s husband, Professor Emeritus Dr. Martin Staniland, passed away last week. Martin was an active affiliated faculty member of the European Studies Center, a wonderful advisor and teacher, and a respected colleague. We extend our condolences to his family and friends and to the GSPIA community during this difficult time. You can read a tribute to him here:

We are so overwhelmed and thankful for your response to this fundraising campaign! With your help, we surpassed our original goal and raised nearly $14,000! Your generous contributions resulted in an anonymous donor matching our goal with a contribution of $10,000. In total, this means that we raised $24,000 to support our graduate students!
We are proud to honor Dr. Alberta Sbragia in this way and recognize her dedication to mentoring and educating young scholars. With more than 75 individual donors, it is clear that she has made a lasting impact on not just the European Studies Center, but the University of Pittsburgh and the field of European and EU studies as a whole.
The Sbragia Fund for Graduate European Studies will be used to support graduate student research on Europe and the European Union, allowing more students the opportunity to follow in Alberta’s footsteps.
We encourage you to keep in touch and stay up to date on the amazing achievements of our students and faculty. To subscribe to our weekly update or newsletter, send us an email at europeanstudies@pitt.edu.
On behalf of the European Studies Center, thank you for your support.
We are beyond thrilled to announce that we have not only reached, but exceeded our initial goal to raise $10,000 in honor of our founding director, Dr. Alberta Sbragia! On behalf of our graduate students, thank you to those who have helped us get to this point. Your generous support will be used to fund doctoral students through dissertation assistance, research and publication support, and (pandemic aside) travel to, and research in, relevant European countries.
Our work does not end here, though, as we still have 7 days remaining in our campaign! Donations are still welcome, and every dollar raised will go to help even more graduate students. Please feel free to continue spreading the word to other alumni, colleagues, family, and friends. We couldn’t have done this without you.
Thank you all!
The Europeans Studies Center
We are so excited to launch this EngagePitt campaign in honor of the founding director of the European Studies Center, Dr. Albert Sbragia. Thank you to all of our generous donors so far for your incredible support! With your help, we have raised $4,265 in just one week, putting us 42% of the way towards our goal of $10,000.
This amount is equivalent to nearly two full student research grants! 100% of donations will be used to fund graduate student research, so every dollar makes a difference. To help us reach our goal, we encourage you to share this within your circles or post the link to your social media platforms.
We appreciate you helping us spread the word!
The European Studies Center has been designated an EU Center for Excellence for 22 years.
Alberta was a faculty member at Pitt from 1974 to 2019. How fortunate were we to have her at Pitt for 45 years?
There are only 8 Jean Monnet European Union Centers of Excellence in the US, and we have one at Pitt!
Over her 45 years at the University, Alberta taught about 120 courses to multiple generations of Pitt students.
Alberta served as Director of the European Studies Center/EU Center of Excellence for 26 years.
500 students and colleagues count Alberta as a mentor and have faculty positions at prestigious universities, think tanks, and in government in the US and abroad—too many to count!
The typical amount given for the Sbragia Award for Graduate European Studies is $2500. Help us support even more students with meaningful funds!
