NPHC Plot Updated

August 29, 2022

We hope you had an enjoyable and productive summer. As we prepare to welcome students back on campus, we wanted to inform you that the NPHC Plot has been completed after the installation of updated oval engravings and crests. Recent work also included the planting and maintenance of flower beds within the Plot.

We hope you’ll soon visit your new home on Pitt’s campus to further reflect upon and celebrate the extraordinary work that you, and generations of the NPHC community, have contributed to this institution and our region. Thank you for your support, feedback, and guidance throughout this process. Because of you, this historic step towards a more equitable future was made possible. Let the work continue to grow from here!

* APPROVE YOUR NPHC PLOT OVAL INSCRIPTION BY TOMORROW, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18*

February 17, 2022

If you haven’t already done so, please click here and check your oval inscription for any mistakes. Zoom in to see your inscription, and please let us know if there are any discrepancies between this rendering and your final inscription submission. We’ve had very few responses to our initial email update last week, so we wanted to send this gentle reminder.

The deadline for any corrections is tomorrow, Friday, February 18, at 5pm (Eastern)After this deadline, the fabrication of the new ovals will begin, and there will be no further opportunities to make any corrections to your inscription. Please send any corrections to s.madni@pitt.edu. If we don’t receive correction requests from you prior to tomorrow’s deadline, we’ll take that to mean your engraving, as listed in the rendering, is correct.

We look forward to installing the new Ovals within the coming weeks. Thank you for your support and commitment to this historic endeavor!

* APPROVE YOUR NPHC PLOT OVAL INSCRIPTION BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18 *

February 11, 2022

In 2017, Pitt’s National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), a student organization representing nine historically black fraternities and sororities, requested that the University construct a Plot on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus. This led to a commitment by Pitt and the wider NPHC community to provide a central space for students and alumni belonging to black Greek-lettered organizations to call home. Through your direct advocacy and support over the years, that Plot was finally unveiled to more than 400 onlookers from the wider NPHC and Panther community this past September. This year, that Plot will be finalized with the plaques and engravings that you’ve dedicated through this historic initiative.

To that end, we’d like to ask you to please help us in completing the final phase of the Plot. We previously communicated that the oval engravings wouldn’t be finalized until the new year, knowing that those who were having trouble envisioning the Plot would want to be part of it once they saw it. CLICK HERE to see a final rendering of the Plot’s ovals (including an additional 52 engravings that came in after the Unveiling). Zoom in to see your inscription, and please let us know if there are any discrepancies between this rendering and your final inscription submission. Any corrections to your inscription(s) must be submitted to s.madni@pitt.edu prior to 5pm (Eastern) on Friday, February 18, 2022. After this deadline, the fabrication of the new ovals will begin, and there will be no further opportunities to make corrections. If we don’t receive correction requests from you prior to the deadline, we will assume that your engraving, as listed in the rendering, is correct.

It's been a long road, but through your understanding, patience, and support, we’re finally at the finish line. For that, we wanted to express our sincere gratitude for your leadership and investment in building a new home for the NPHC community at Pitt. In facilitating this evolving endeavor, we’ve learned a lot about working more integrally with our NPHC constituents. As an institution rooted in learning, we pledge to build on our understanding and make further inroads into working more intrinsically with you all on NPHC initiatives.

Thank you for your support and commitment.

Still Time to Engrave Your Legacy

December 09, 2021

During this season of gratitude, we wanted to express our sincere appreciation for your generous support of the NPHC Plot. Because of you, the Plot stands proudly on display at the heart of Pitt’s campus for everyone to see, share, and celebrate. The NPHC community now has a central home on campus that will allow future generations of Pitt students to further cultivate and carry on the legacy built by former generations. As we draw near the end of this historic year for the NPHC community in Western Pennsylvania, we wanted to remind you of the opportunity to commemorate your name (or the name of a loved one) on the Plot.

We’ve almost reached our fundraising goal, and our final deadline for accepting new oval engravings will be December 31st.  We will, of course, still accept contributions of any size towards the Plot should you wish to support the overall initiative but naming opportunities will entirely cease to be offered by the end of this month. The new, permanent Ovals will be going up on the Plot at some point in the New Year.

Please visit engage.pitt.edu/NPHCPlot for information on how to engrave your legacy for future generations of NPHC members to know the names of the giants on whose shoulders they stand.

We wish you all the best this Holiday season!

Thank you! The Plot Unveiling was a huge success - Welcome Home!

October 06, 2021

Thank you for your support of the NPHC Plot on Pitt’s campus. The recent Unveiling of the Plot at Homecoming was a resounding success; over 400 alumni, students, staff and supporters attended the dedication. Speakers included Chancellor Gallagher, Vanetta Cheeks-Reeder (National President, NPHC, Inc.), Kenyon Bonner (Vice Provost, Student Affairs), Val Njie (President, Pitt Alumni Association), Thomas Brooks (President, African American Alumni Council), and Cameron Spooner (President, Pitt NPHC). A brief recap of the Unveiling can be seen here.

Cheers echoed throughout Schenley Quad following the unveiling of the Plot, welcoming each of the Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities to their new home at the center of Pitt’s campus. Press and media reported on the historic occasion, including coverage in WTAE, The New Pittsburgh Courier, and Pittwire.

We’ve since been inundated with requests to allow further engravings on the monument. As such, our fundraising deadline for the Plot has been extended to December 31st, 2021. However, all remaining engravings will go on a first-come-first-serve basis, so please visit engage.pitt.edu/NPHCplot soon if you don’t want to miss the opportunity to commemorate your (or a loved one’s) name on this Plot.

Thank you for your support and participation in what was termed by Dr. Bonner as, “a new blue, gold and Black moment” in Pitt’s history!

Less Than One Week Left!

July 27, 2021

Thank you to everyone who has generously contributed their time and resources to support the NPHC Plot Project! We cannot tell you how grateful we are for your efforts, and we are anxiously awaiting the Unveiling event on Saturday, September 25 during Homecoming weekend.

The main fundraising period for the project ends on Sunday, August 1 at midnight. Since we need to give the architects time to plan and execute the structure, this is the final week to ensure your Oval engravings will be included in the Unveiling at Homecoming. Gifts will still be accepted on the NPHC Plot Project page after August 1, but we cannot guarantee that your name will be incorporated into the Ovals before the September 25 event. Cement your legacy by making your Oval Naming Opportunity gift today!

A big congratulations to the organizations that have fully completed raising the necessary funds for their plaque commitments as well:

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha (Charter Member Plaque)
  • Alpha Phi Alpha (Omicron Charter Plaque)
  • Delta Sigma Theta (National Founders & Mu Charter Plaques)
  • Kappa Alpha Psi (Beta Epsilon Charter Plaque)

We look forward to seeing you all at Homecoming! An invitation and registration form will be distributed via email in August.

Thank you again for your support – this Plot would not be possible without you. H2P!
