Who Are the Pitt Horizon Scholars?
Pitt Horizon Scholars are resilient youth and young adults who have experience in the child welfare system and are prospective or current Pitt students.
Ways You Can Help
There are three ways to help support Pitt Horizon Scholars at the University of Pittsburgh.
The first way is as a mentor/support team member. Mentors and support team members will be assigned to a Pitt Horizon Scholar. As a trusted mentor and support team member, you will provide your time and expertise in many anticipated ways including but not limited to: supporting basic skills, celebrating life’s events, helping Pitt Horizon Scholars with moving in and out of dorms, offering an encouraging word and sound advice, and more. Each student will have a team of mentors/support team members.

The second way to support Pitt Horizon Scholars is through donations. The monies collected will be used to offset the cost of attendance. Although tuition is covered through state and institutional funding, the cost of attendance—including housing, meal plans, books, hygiene items, food not included in the meal plan, clothing, etc.—are left to the student. If our goal of $25,000 is met, this fund will be endowed.
The third way to support Pitt Horizon Scholars is to spread the word about the need for mentors/support team members and donations. Please consider sharing this important initiative so that others can get involved. Pitt Horizon Scholars are students who, through no fault of their own, are facing challenges that often prohibit their ability to see a path forward to an education. Removing some of the financial barriers and providing a strong support system will ensure that Pitt Horizon Scholars have what they need to achieve student success.

Contributions received for this project shall be used in accordance with the purpose described herein, the terms in the FAQs and applicable law. For questions that cannot be answered in the FAQs, please call 412-648-4658 or email engage@pitt.edu.
By donating $25, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will be able to buy hygiene products.
By donating $50, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will be able to purchase a new pair of shoes.
By donating $100, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will be able to purchase a new winter coat.
By donating $250, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will be able to purchase books for one semester.
By donating $500, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will be able to pay for a phone plan to interact with other students.
By donating $1,000, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will have a portion of their housing covered.
By donating $2,500, a Pitt Horizon Scholar will be able to pay for an unlimited meal plan.
