Help the Asian Studies Center and Film Studies Program launch Screenshot: Asia, our new Asian film and media screening series and film festival!

Who We Are:

This year, the Asian Studies Center and the Film Studies Program are developing Screenshot: Asia, Pitt’s film series and festival dedicated to promoting and celebrating Asian and Asian American film and video. As Pitt continues to expand its global footprint and increase its embrace of internationalism, initiatives such as Screenshot: Asia serve a critical role.  The film series and festival will increase student, staff, faculty, and community awareness of the diversity of cultures and peoples from all over the world and instigate learning about crucial current events and cultural elements that are driving contemporary Asian societies.

Our Mission:

Screenshot: Asia is a collective project among faculty, staff, and students to celebrate Asian diversity through film and media programming. By screening films, hosting workshops, bringing in speakers, and many other activities, we hope to promote cultural diversity and encourage diverse arts education in Southwestern PA.

About the Project:

Our proposed programming over the next year includes screenings and workshops, culminating in our first annual festival, scheduled for September 2020, which will include events such as:

Spotlight on Asian Horror in October 2020 (pre-Halloween screening of some of the best horror films out of Asia)

Screenshot: Silent Asia featuring a film and live accompaniment

Screen and video exhibitions

Creative filmmakers’ workshops

Year-round film screenings and discussions

These events will culminate in a one-week Asian and Asian American film festival, in which we will show some of the newest independent films coming out of Asia, which will include the Biennial University of Pittsburgh Japan Documentary Film Award.

Moreover, we need a place where students can learn how to be the arts leaders of tomorrow. Though the series, students can intern with the festival, design programs, and learn about the ins and outs of festival life. We hope to mold Pittsburgh’s art community for tomorrow and years to come!

Where Your Funds Go:

In order to make this possible, we need a great deal of financial help to put on a media series and film festival! Our budget is $140,000. While some of those funds will come from grants and corporate donors, we can’t do it without individual donors. To this end, we hope to raise at least $7000 through individual donations here at Engage Pitt!

With your generous donations, that $7000 can help to:

  • Support the screening of ten films for the September 2020 festival.
  • Bring a film director to come to the fest and give a talk/workshop at the festival.
  • Publicize the festival and spread the word to the entire Pittsburgh community.
  • Fund a community screening for Asian refugees and displaced peoples in the Pittsburgh region.

How You Can Help:

DONATE: Every little bit helps. $5, 10, 15 donations all get us a little bit closer to our goal.
