The Panther Literacy Council is a student-run organization that strives for literacy advancement for children of the Pittsburgh Public School District. With the support of Pittserves and The United Way, we aspire to spread knowledge of the importance of children’s literacy by showcasing proper reading techniques and celebrating literacy in order to raise awareness of the adversities students in the public school district face. We are comprised of a diverse group of students that are involved in a variety of clubs, activities, and majors with one common goal to help the children of our community by celebrating literacy.
The Pittsburgh Public School District faces a limited budget that affects the education of its students. As an overarching goal, we hope to provide 5,500 children in the Pittsburgh Public School District, pre-kindergarten to first, with a book and literacy materials in order to celebrate literacy. Our hope is by giving the younger population of Pittsburgh Public reading materials, we can instill a sense of love for reading. This could be the extra support that students need to make a lasting impact in the future. The donations from this fundraiser will be used to fund various events for Pitt students to participate in literacy material creations as well as celebrate literacy on Pitt's campus.
With your help, the Panther Literacy Council will be hosting volunteer events for students to get involved in the creation of the literacy activities for the children in order to celebrate literacy! We are seeking the support of the Pitt community to help us raise the necessary funds to accomplish our goal. Your generous donation to our campaign will help cover:
We are also urging the Pitt community to get involved in the campaign by purchasing their own books to give to the children or donating gently used books. A recommended list of titles can be found here. We will be hosting collection events on February 26th, March 11th, and March 25th on campus. You can also feel free to donate books at any time to the office of PittServes, located in William Pitt Union 925.
We would also like to invite everyone to come out to our volunteer events. They are a great way to get involved on campus and to celebrate literacy!
The generous support of individuals like you makes it possible for our group to exist and to make the community a great place to live. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at pantherliteracy@gmail.com.
With this donation, we will be able to purchase construction paper in order to create literacy awareness materials for children and their families.
Holy Cow! It is raining books out here! This donation will allow us to personally deliver the books to the children by giving us the means to get to the schools, as well as bins for the books.
Nom nom nom! College students are very hungry readers and food is what helps fuel our events. Your donation will allow us to purchase food for attendees at one of our events.
This donation is wild enough for us to host another volunteer event for University of Pittsburgh students to create literacy awareness materials for children!
Pitt students love to give like the Giving Tree. Help make it possible for us to continue to promote literacy awareness on campus through sponsored events and fun activities! ...and the tree was happy.
"He will been able to explore a whole new world." This donation will go towards our final event to celebrate the importance of reading in the community.
