CILE Annual Student Travel Fund
Pitt Law Center for International Legal Education (CILE): Advancing the Rule of Law Through a Personalized Approach to Learning
CILE is home to the LLM and SJD programs at Pitt Law. Each year we invite a small number of select international students to study US Law and gain cross-cultural experience. Students can craft a unique course of study based on their legal interests, while studying alongside their American JD counterparts.
For JD students, CILE facilitates the International Comparative Law Certificate, sponsors various moot court competitions, supports the International Law Society, and helps students gain study abroad experience, internships, and scholarships.
The CILE Annual Student Travel Fund
We are asking for your support of our CILE Annual Student Travel Fund. The purpose of this project is to secure funds for CILE students to travel for internships, moot court competitions, or study abroad opportunities. The cost for travel continues to rise and, in the past, CILE has been able to provide travel support to more than 500 students.
Traveling abroad during law school, whether for internships, moot competitions or to study, provides broader exposure to and first-hand knowledge of other legal systems and cultures, in-depth study of specific issues or areas of law, increased foreign language proficiency, and an expanded network of contacts around the world.
While at Pitt Law, and because of CILE we were able to not only explore and immerse ourselves in international legal environments, but we were also fortunate enough to travel around the world for hands-on practical experience that left us with long-lasting memories and friendships. From working with the Legal Policy Division of the UN Department of Justice in Kosovo, to participating in the Vis Moot in Vienna, to training Vis Moot teams in Bahrain and Oman, the travel opportunities afforded to us by Pitt Law’s CILE were invaluable and unique. As many of you know from firsthand experience, these travel opportunities during law school create lasting memories, invaluable skills, and, perhaps most importantly, enduring relationships.
As alumnae of Pitt Law, prior participants in many CILE programs, and past recipients of generous travel support from CILE, we are thrilled to announce the creation of the CILE Travel Fund. Funding for travel for Pitt Law students is sorely needed and current resources are limited. The need to support travel for law school students is critical and it is up to us to help create opportunities for future students that we were so fortunate to have while students ourselves. The Travel Fund will specifically provide financial support to Pitt Law students to enable them to travel for study abroad programs, internships, and international moot competitions.

Immersion in the language, culture, legal system and legal education system of another country through study abroad can substantially enhance a student’s understanding of the law and the global environment in which it is created and applied.
Study abroad may be comprised of the Summer Program at the University of Augsburg, Germany or through Pitt Law's exchange program with the Sorbonne in Paris.
Foreign internships provide excellent international law work experience, incomparable networking opportunities, and immersion in new legal cultures.
Pitt Law students have consistently excelled in international moot court competitions, generally competing in the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and the Jessup International Moot for International Court of Justice cases.
CILE provides Pitt Law students with travel opportunities allowing them to gain practical internship experience that will prepare them for careers as global lawyers.
