Join the cause for a healthier world! Support Pitt Global Public Health Brigade’s service trip to Honduras.
The mission of Pitt Global Public Health Brigade is to educate students about the importance of public health in a community and to foster an awareness of the interconnectedness of public health and medicine. We hope to empower rural communities to prevent common illnesses through in-home infrastructural development, community leader training, and health education. Each year, our brigade takes a trip to make a direct impact in that country and learn more about public health in the process.
In May of 2015, Pitt students in the Global Public Health Brigade will be visiting Honduras. Our mission is to help the impoverished villages of Honduras in collaboration with one of their country’s most highly regarded nonprofits, Sociedad Amigos de los Ninos, led by Sister Maria Rosa Leggol, a recent nominee of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Bacterial infections and respiratory illnesses are common in many rural communities in Honduras. These preventable health issues are often the result of housing conditions, such as dirt floors, carbon dioxide emissions from outdoor stoves, and a lack of clean water storage units. During the 7-10 day brigade in Honduras, brigadiers work closely with community members to prevent common illnesses and provide sustainable infrastructural development through the construction of the following:
The student volunteers who will travel to Honduras are asked to fund their own transportation and each must contribute $700 to support the Global Public Health Brigade effort. In addition, each volunteer contributes $750 for construction supplies that will be used to build water storage units, latrines, concrete floors, and eco-stoves. By making a gift, you will help ensure that each of these dedicated student volunteers will have the funds necessary to participate in this global endeavor to help prevent illness by creating a healthy environment that every individual deserves.
